yea....as a waitress there... could all you cheap coupon clippers at least leave a tip that is appropriate for the mealS you order. Your waitress brings two meals, you eat two meals...tip on two meals, not the one you pay for...

Anonymous said...

I agree..... coupons are good. As a server, we tip out on both meals. If you dont tip out on both meals then there is no reason to use the coupons.

Melissa said...

Exactly. Even if you leave a tip you are still saving money because you didn't have to pay for the meal

I agree 100%. I am a server at Fridays and cannot stand when people will come in and run a server to death then say wait have a coupon. Oh thanks alot because now we know that if our tip wasnt already going to be cut back due to the economy, now you are gonna think, Hey I have a coupon now I only have to tip on the amount thats left (believe it or not, some people do not even tip on the remaining amount.) Just remember take care of your servr we have to tip out to other people. We dont work for free! 18-20% of the (original Bill) is a good tip, Not $5.00 on $100.00. Thanks and I hope that everyone will continue to come in and enjoy the breaks we are already giving!

Anonymous said...

I totally agree with the servers, and I always tip 20-25% of the original price, BUT if you have to rely on tips.... then find a new profession. Honestly, is it worth it?

Anonymous said...

I agree.. and besides if you're not getting the kind of tip you want it's probably b/c you're not as good as a server like you think. You get a minimal tip if you only show me minimal service.

Anonymous said...

Ditto. Most servers now a days are snotty and dont put forth much effort. So intill I get a good waitress, I will not put forth much money.

Anonymous said...

I always leave a tip commensurate with the service, and I am happy to say that most of the time it is 20%, and more if the service was exceptional. I am just happy to see so many young people being polite an doing a good job, no matter what it is.

Anonymous said...

its rude to refer to everyone as cheap. did you ever stop to think someone has a family and a little help goes a long way when it comes to coupons. no because your probably 19 and think the customers owe you. sorry for ya sister it dont work that way. you get what you give.

Anonymous said...

I have to agree I have had some crummy people wait on me and I wont leave a tip to someone who takes forever to wait on me or does a horrible job. If you dont like what you are getting paid then quit and stop complaining to us. Besides people with coupons are probably trying to save money and need it so dont make them feel bad because you are not happy with your job, it is not their fault!

Anonymous said...

who wouldn't use a coupon for a free meal if they could? In today's economy we all could use a little help. With that being said, I would definitely tip servers out on both meals and tip well but honestly, nowadays most servers think that taking my order, bringing my food to the table and then bringing my bill to the table (while I'm still eating) is service...how about coming to check how my meal is, or see if I need anything else while I'm eating? Don't take it out on the customer for some of the crappy tippers that you get and if you don't have good days with your tips, why are you staying there? My ex worked in the food industry for multiple years and he treated everyone great and the money was aweseome for him because he was personable and kind to every person that sat at his table. Sure, he got bad tips but there are always those people who will tip bad even if they have money...that goes with the territory.

Anonymous said...

I am so tired of servers complaining about the amount of tips you get. If you are that upset about it please...get a new job. Do not expect 2 people to tip you $6 for sitting there for 20 minutes, and all you did was basically ask if everything is ok. Be real..most people do not ask for much..maybe a straw that was not given to them in the first place. In this economy be happy with 10%, and be glad when the customer does not complain about your snotty attitude. Quit being ungrateful. Like the others said some people have families to take care of, clipping coupons gives them a chance to enjoy a night out that maybe they do not get to do often. Grow up, and quit being inconsiderate...and then stop and remember that it could be you and not that the customer is cheap at all.

Anonymous said...

I think that all the servers need to realize that they are the ones who chose that job. If they do not like it, get new job. I wish people would be realistic...expecting someone to tip 20% just because that is custom....is just crazy. Just for bringing food to the table. Especially with prices being so high. It is crazy. But servers do not think you deserve the big tip..especially when the customer did not ask for anything...and all that customer wanted was his food. Be happy that you have a job in the first place and appreciate whatever tip you get.

kimberlyp1964 said...

I totally agree....I didn't pick your profession. I know how much I generally spend eating out and the tip is already determined and can rise or fall from the minute I walk in the door. Good service and food is expected and anything more or less affects the end result. Some will argue that the waitress has little to do with the food but I say that they need to make it their business. If you serve it, you apparently agree that it is servable.
Another thing....when you are working, keep your opinions regarding co-workers or managers to yourself. Customers don't like hearing all your juicy gossip and complaining. I personally overheard a manager chewing out an employee and thought it was in poor taste and out of line. I did approach her at the podium and let her know how unprofessional I thought her actions were regardless of the reasons.

For all you waiters and waitresses complaining about tips, I guess you should've paid more attention in school... then maybe your life wouldn't suck so much... stop complaining and get a life. No one OWES you a tip, if you don't like minimum wage, try6 your local coimmunity college and work on some skills- it won't get any easier (or wait, you might become asst manager)... LOL

Anonymous said...

My husband and I eat out quite often and we also use coupons quite often. When the server treats us like he/she is glad that we are there and makes an attempt to be pleasant and helpful, we always tip on the original bill. We understand that somethings are not under their control...the kitchen may be having problems or the restaurant might be understaffed. However, we do expect the server to acknowledge these situations and to do a good job of correcting them or compensating for them. You get what you give..if you give good service then you will get a good tip. If you don't give me good service then my tip will be my way of letting you know that I was not satisified.

Anonymous said...

I worked through high school and college as a waitress. And often was under tipped. Two things people don't realize is tipping is essential because we are taxed on tips. The restaurant keeps a record of all your sales and if at the end of the year you didn't report enough tips according to the irs standard of at least 10% then the restaurant will add onto your W-2 something called allocated tips to make up for it, otherwise the restaurant would be in hot water. So basically remember we get taxed on everything your order. The reason why you should therefore leave more than 10% is we also have to tip at the end of the night our bus boys and occasionally even our cooks. What I hated the most is when a family would come in, small kids in tow because it was kids eat free night, and leave a huge mess. Broken crakcers wedge down into the carpet, spillt drinks, syrup everywhere and leave me a buck. Now in that all to common situation - I already would owe more to the IRS than they left me based on their tab but I still have to pass money onto the busboy even bigger of a tip because of the extra mess. So now I am really in the negative and in essence I have to pay for waiting on you. So if you can't afford to double the tax on your bill and leave it for the tip then please go through a drive through -don't make someone else pay for your meal.

Waiters/Waitresses @ Fridays... Please give us all a break and STOP Complaining about tips. If you werent so cocky thinking you deserved a tip for your fake smiles then maybe you would get a bigger one. Also it is up to FRIDAYS to pay you more....not the customer. 12% unemployment right now so you should expect to except less.

I came here to print out what I perceived to be a great offer at TGI Fridays, and its being used as a spot for employees to vent about customers?

Let me get this picture: Customers are needed for the profit of the business. A promo is offered to generate more business over a special event. Customers, through internet advertising (read about the offer on AOL and clicked link to go to this site..) a being steered to print the coupon to use. And when we get here, the page is loaded down with a bunch of disgruntled employees, who are prejudging or attempting to put a guilt conscience on potential customers about low tips because of a coupon...not taking into consideration that there are some people out here who tip solely on performance and not necessarily on the amount of the ticket...and ruin the mood before I even consider getting there.

Gee...thanks a lot. All the complaining would MAKE me pay more attention to the quality of service and whether to tip at all.

Manipulation really irritates me. I wonder if TGI Fridays know that their employees are bad mouthing the clients on the coupon page...and how management is addressing the issue, because it sure dampers the incentive they intended...

You are stabbing your own company, its profits and its reputation in the back.

I used to be a waitress so I understand the whole tipping thing. Waitressing is definitely not an easy job. However, I will only tip 10% if my service was less than average. I am tired of getting poor service. When my drink is empty please fill it up. NO customer should have to ASK to get their drink refilled. I have to ask and ask and ask. Hello I'm eating and my water is empty? I shouldn't have to say "Excuse me,..." while the server is walking by my table without a second glance. While you are supposed to tip on the whole cost of your meal (that's etiquette), if they want a 20% tip, they need to provide excellent service.

How come when I click on the link for the coupon it just takes me to the TGI Friday's main website....there's no coupon on the site! WTF??

OMG Anonymous waiter/waitress, you really need to step back and take a reality check. $100-300 a night in tips? and you're bitching about people being cheap? Where are you working at, I want a job there! Stop being such an ungrateful bastard and be happy you have a job in this rough economy

leigh said...

Where's the dayum coupon for God's sake and stop bitchin about ur friggin tips already.

dumbass site, where is the dam coupon?

Lisa said...

This is silly. I'm a waitress, and while I don't appreciate being poorly tipped (some people tip on service but some don't know WHAT they're doing), it certainly doesn't help improve the situation by chewing out all customers in general, especially when the ones who tip well see how many waiters have a bad attitude and are ungrateful. It's one thing to be annoyed over a specific person leaving a bad tip, but if you're just bitter in general, not only is it unhealthy but you'll alienate a lot of nice people who might've given you a good tip if you weren't so disenfranchised. The tip system is far from perfect, but you get to work fewer hours making more than you would on wages, and if you work hard you can walk out with over a hundred dollars cash in 4-6 hours.

I will say though, that a lot of people who are complaining about entitled servers could stand to try serving themselves. When I eat out, I'm often shocked at how my family or friends will treat servers, accusing them of things or leaving a bad tip because they didn't want to break a five. And of course, they think they treat servers very well. Quite frankly the bottom line is that people need to treat each other the way they'd like to be treated. If you go into it with that attitude, it doesn't matter if you're a server or a customer, you'll have a better experience than if you take all this venom to the table.

Most time we went to a restaurant, we didn't bother our waitress that much at all. All she needed to do was just bringing the food, refilling the drink and bringing the check. That's it. Then we paid 15% tip of the total check, that was good enough.

Anonymous said...

If we can choose to pick up our food by ourselves and serve ourselves in TGIF without paying tips, we will.

Trell said...

Well I came just to print the coupon, I'm glad to see how the servers feel because I tip solely on my server. And as soon as I sit down I always lay my coupon on the table and of course the server always treat me like im not gonna tip so yes i'll give you exactly what you expected. You smile fake, I have to hunt you down to re-fill my water with lemon. When you refill my glass I dont get ice added so Im drinking room temp water, lol. You guys kill me. Yes i was a server for 3 days before the company i just got hired closed down. My first night i made over $100 and i've never been a server. It was my personality because it was a buffett resturant. I still laugh cause everyone wanted to know how I did it. Rule #1 Treat tips like a bonus! Don't go looking for it... Other wise take your stank attitudes to a different profession. PS. If you are atleast Cute/Sexy that starts you off with $5, so if you dont get at least $5... then you already ready know... LMAO

Anonymous said...

Do you know some servers are teachers? Trying to earn extra money because they aren't paid enough. Also service members or there spouses.... Same thing. Also students. Did you know the IRS audits servers? Tips are part of how they are paid. Sure restaurants could pay them better, but they would have to raise prices. Lots of restaurant personal have degrees, children, spouses, bills.... If it wasn't for them you could eat at 7/11. Learn to tip. Their are standards, ask the governent. A server pays taxes on the total bill. Pre comp....... So show some respect

Anonymous said...

All I ask as a server is that my customers treat me like they would like to be treated. Having said that, if a table has the manners to look up when I talk to them and answer comprehensibly (not mumbling into their menu) I will do my best to make your experience very enjoyable (because I want you to come back and request me). Now, to those that defend not tipping or say "you chose your profession", go eat at McDonald's and get your own damn drinks. You go out to eat so someone else takes care of what you want. If you can't pay for it then you shouldn't be eating out, groceries are much less expensive. If we were paid a wage (not $4.19 an hour) your dinner would cost more and your service would be worse, because frankly my dear, I wouldn't give a damn about your wants if the money I made wasn't dependent on my level of service.

Anonymous said...

Since when did a coupon site become a site for servers to vent their frustrations out on the customers about tips? You're actually making me look at servers A LOT differently. Stop demanding what should be left as a tip because 20% isn't manditory. A tip is given as an acknowledgment of services rendered. Further, a coupon could help bring in business so that you may earn a tip. It's a partnership... without customers you couldn't earn that tip!!

Anonymous said...

I agree. Stop whining about tips. Times is hard for everybody. Be graceful you get a paycheck from Fiday's. I work everyday..no tips for me but I have a job.

Anonymous said...

This has been very interesting for me to read. I am both a resturant employee and a resturant patron. Do I usually tip a little higher even for less than perfect service when I go out? Yes. Mostly this is because I am aware of the numerous situations that could be going into why my server might not have brought his/her A-game to my table. It can be anything from another patron being very demandning, computer issues, overbearing managers, sub-par support staff, daily sales reqirements, kitchen complications, desert preperations, etc. Each of these are common issues that arise in a resturant, but when they occur on top of each other, it can effect the mood of the server. It is because I have this prior knowledge that I tip a little higher. For people who do not have this prior knowledge I can see where you are coming from in wanting to reduce the tip because you water isn't refilled. What I would ask is that you take other things into consideration, like if it is a busy night or to notice if your server is stuck at another table answering many question. This could be a factor as to why they aren't able to assist you at the moment.

Any tip, big or small, adds to the overall pot, but as any worker would agree, you want to get the most for your efforts. I must also say that as a customer, a tip should encompass the following aspects of your service:

1) Did you enjoy your meal? If there was an issue did your server solve it? We don't control how the food is prepared but we can do damage control.

2) Did you feel welcome & appreciated in the resturant? From the host's greeting on your way in, to the support staff packaging your leftovers to go, to the server dropping off your check, all interactions with staff personel should be pleasent.

3) The original total of the check, prior to any discounts or coupons. As a server I will treat all customers as equals, whether you have a coupon or not, so in return I ask for you to recognize this and tip me as you would whether or not you had a coupon.

For me, working in the resturant business is just a job, not a career. It's a means to an end. Once I graduate and have my Master's it will be something that I leave behind.

Now does anyone know where I can get an actual copy of this coupon?

Anonymous said...

You don't just automatically get 20% because you're my waiter/ress. If you are visiting my table a couple times during the meal and think that's worth $5 on a $25 bill you are mistaken. I'm assuming most work a few tables at once - what do you expect to make, $20 an hour, more than some factory workers make? Get real! Restaurants need to pay their employees better ... since WE PAY much more for food out at a restaurant than we can get at home I expect some basic service to go with that - if the server is super friendly and attentive then I give do give 20% but not all the time, because most of the servers I have experienced act like they don't even want to be working. You'll get my pocket change. It's obvious from most of these posts you all expect a little bit too much.

Ok...My husband and I tip about 30% if the severice is good. that doesn't eman dote on us.

That means when there are only 3 other couple in the restraunt and two other servers, DONT leave me sitting for 35 minutes with an empty drink. That means if I ask for something, Like say a water, pls dont walk past my table 10 times before bringing it to me.

Also, the servers that look at customers with kids, and roll their eyes before wlaking up...Sometimes- we see you. We understand kids are ususalyl not fun to wait on. BTW- I clean up the floor around my kids seats, and wipe up the table to ease your damn jobs. So when you stop by my table TWICE in an hour before bringing me my check? one time to take my order the next to bring it? Yeah, I prob won't tipvyou well.

I am a server at TGI Fridays. We are paid $2.15 per hour plus tips. The restaurant where I work is in a college town, I am a college student. I go to school 5 days a week and work random shifts when I am able to. I do not feel like I am less of a person because I am a server and frankly it hurts to hear that people think that way. I do not get angry when people tip less than 18%, it is frustrating when a check is $200 and I get $5 but its something I have learned to accept. Just always imagine you server is your child or your friend...how would you want someone to treat them if they were a struggling college student just trying to get by? Also, always ask yourself, how much would I charge for me to do what they are doing?

Anonymous said...

BULLSHIT you have to get paid min. wage no matter where you work. $2.15 my ass

Anonymous said...

ALl you servers out there think you should be tipped 20% for taking an order, bringing water, serving food, and bringing the check? Are you are dreaming of the monies coming in? Your job description is to provide service for the waiter. The restaurant you work out should take 20% out of the check to give back to waiters - that is what should be happening in the perfect world. I am not going to give you $20 out of $100 check for the same service I would receive if my check was $25. Your tip is dependent on the type of service you bring to my table and whether or not you go out of your way to hook me up or do something special like bring a bday cake for free. I do tip a min. of 10% pre-tax and up to 25% if special treatment is offered so I'm not a cheap ass but a smart person struggling in a bad economy.

I go to tgi fridays all the time with the coupon deals and the phone survey for the free appitizer ...every time except 1 male waiter... we had to ask for silverware, napkins plates for the appitizer refill on water and ice tea..so the one that was the best got a 30%tip on what the order would have been without the coupon the ones lacking did not...1 time our waitress was to busy talking and flirting with the 2 guys in the booth behind us... but like everyone if we want to go out more often we have to go where the deals are...

Anonymous said...

I came to this sight to print out coupons for my students and I daresay I found the conversations a bit amusing.

When I was a struggling college student once upon a time, I worked for Pizza Hut. I worked hard and smiled and waited attentively. There are good tippers. There are those that feel it is a waste.

One thing's for sure, I'll never go back to the restaurant industry for a job (I'd rather stock shelves at Smith's!). That industry, in my opinion, demands your soul--might as well have it signed in blood! You give them (the restaurant industry) everything you've got and they don't pay you a decent wage to begin with. I had found it preposterous to depend on customers to pay part of my wage at all.

Good luck, servers--just think of it as a foot in the door into the rat race!

Anonymous said...

I have been a server at the same place for 8 years (not Firdays cuz I love their food too much!) I am here to print out a coupon and no such luck on that one. Yes servers do depend on tips in the great state of PA we are paid 2.83 an hour. I don't think people realize this...If your service is bad ask to see a manager. You will probably get a better deal than your coupon anyway! :) Just remember what goes around comes around the more you give the more you get.

im a waitress and some of the comments are crazy to me. you say that you need to save money, thats why you tip so little. well maybe your broke self needs to eat at home, noodles are what, 25 cents!... can you afford that? waitstaff have families, bills and lives too. At your job does your boss, or whoever you answer to, run you around like crazy, then only pay you 25% of salary!! the tips you give is our salary. so if you too broke to tip well, you need to stay at home and learn how to budget your money better... you people are lazy and cheap, dont blame us!

jwillinger said...

To the person who said "BULLSHIT you have to get paid min. wage no matter where you work. $2.15 my ass" and anyone else who believes that - you couldn't be more wrong. Places that you will make tips DO NOT have to pay you minimum wage. The tips make up the difference from what they pay you to min. wage. If you do not average minimum wage within a pay period you can be compensated for it. Imagine how fun that is...

I wasn't going to comment, but it seems that there are quite a few ignorant people out there.

I am and have been a server off and on for the last 15 years. I did it through school and when I had a "real" job to make extra cash. I have a cosmetology license and I am an RN.

I choose to serve now because my husband is in the military. With us moving so often I am almost guaranteed a server job within days of getting to our next state. Other jobs are not so easy to come by with the economy the way it is. Besides, I actually enjoy serving. I love talking to and meeting new people - expecially since I am usually quite new to an area.

Many, MANY people do not tip based on service. They have a set amount that they will tip no matter the service and no matter the price of the bill. This is very frustrating!

I understand that alot of servers don't do their jobs well anymore, but the ones that do still get punished because people don't care.

If you are going to go out to eat, make sure you have enough for a 20% tip. If the server doesn't do well, then tip less but tipping is PART OF the eating out experience. If you can't afford it, head to McDonald's or eat at home.

Remember when you are leaving your "generous" 10% tip: after tipping out the bartender, hostess, and bussers your server is left with about 5-6% of that tip.

Another thing is, some of the things that happen are NOT the servers fault. Servers represent the restaurant at the table so they get the brunt of anything that has gone wrong - including kitchen screw-ups, bartender screw-ups, etc...

Please, please...tip well. If you do not have a good experience ask for the manager immediately. Most managers will comp some or most of your meal.

Anonymous said...

I was like the previous person, I was not going to leave a comment, but I wanted to respond. They are correct, when you are in a tip based job they do not have to pay you minimum wage. Your tips that you make have to make up the difference and yes if you do not then they will have to make sure you make at least min wage.

I was a server for many years and yes people do not always tip the way they should. I also do understand that things happen that can effect how the customers experience was that visit. I always stayed in contact with my customers if there was a problem in the kitchen or anything and they would thank me for that. It is not an easy job.

Because I have done this job, what drives me crazy is when I only see the server 3 times, to take the order and to deliver it and and to bring the check and the restaurant is almost empty. I am the first to understand all the tip outs you have to do at the end of the night, but you can't expect me to tip 20% when you act like you don't care if I was there or not.

I had crappy servers where I worked and I would have their tables asking me for things because they were being ignored. When I would tell their server they would just say "yeah yeah I'll get to it." It is like any job you have people who want to do their job well and people who just show up. That is in any profession.

Anonymous said...

Listen, I'm going to make this post as long as possible just so it will be seen by all the idiots out there saying servers get paid more than 2 ish dollars an hour.

You're idiots.

Do you honestly think a restaurant can afford to pay servers minimum wage, on top of bartenders, and pay the cooks their higher hourly wages, and management salary on top? I work as a manager at another food chain, and all I can say is I waited on enough tables in my life to know that the majority of the population is ignorant to servers wages. So unless you want to pay 25.00 for a burger, 30.00 for some chicken, and 45.00 for a steak at a chili's, TGIFridays, Applebees, etc...then you all need to stop being so narrow-sighted. In this country, we tip.

Most of them don't "choose" their professions. A lot are students, a lot are single mothers, a lot are adults with degrees from respectable schools. I've seen social workers, teachers, and even some young professional graphic artists. All stuggling to pay their bills, and all trying to find a place to put their degrees to good use. So whoever it was that called, "BULLSHIT" to servers not getting minimum wage, was just an ignorant, uncultered moron who doesn't need anymore attention from the people on this page.

It's really simple, first off...you never tip OFF of service. You use your service as a base to what percent of your bill you leave. It's very basic...

Rude/disrespectful: No tip

Bad service, they just don't seem to care: 5%, send them a message

Bad service, they seemed to not try that hard to keep up: 10%

Not great service, not bad service, you leave satisfied: 15%

Good service, you leave with expectations over met: 20%

Memorable experience, terrific server you'd ask for by name: 25%

This is what gives some servers a goal. When certain religous/ethnic/social groups consistantly tip horrible amounts to us, and then use the excuse constantly that it's "Hard times", "Crazy", etc in regards to tips, it creates the other end of the bad service spectrum no one seems to be wanting to talk about. The customers fault.

It isn't fair to any server, to ever be under tipped simply based on your financial situation, or your belief, or the old standards. Only, ever, forever tip badly or stiff a server if they completely floor you with how bad they were. Otherwise you're just part of the stereotype, ignorant, and probably fall into one of a few choice categories.

I fully and excitedly await hearing all your ignorant responses if you want to argue this point. Because regardless...if you think a server shouldn't be tipped, when they give you good service, and you'd rather be FORCED to pay 25.00 for a burger, over CHOOSING to tip your GOOD servers well time to time to actually keep good servers employed...then how about trying to show just a bit more insight into the situation.

It must be different in other states, in CA, servers get the minimum wage..or more. And no, it does not cost $25 for a burger. Owners just make a bigger profit in areas they are not forced to pay fair wages.

Anonymous said...

do the math, pissy service = pissy tips.

No, the cost of living is higher in Cali...that's why, don't you people do any research whatsoever? The cost of apartments out there is sometimes double the amount of some areas of the country, so obviously most jobs out there have higher minimum wages, and only SOME serving jobs get higher wages in some areas, not all. Even where I live all servers make 2.13 an hour, but in certain restaurants they pay 4 ish. Regardless, in 90% of America servers get paid 2.13 an hour, so that's what one should assume going into it.

Anonymous said...

Yes, the cost of living is higher in ca, but the other post stated if servers were paid more than $2 an hour, a burger would be $25, which is crazy. The food at these chains cost the same in all states. So that means the owners CAN pay servers more in other states as well. The rent/lease to the owners in other states is less, so they have a higher cash flow than in CA.
For tip dependent workers, they should learn to have a better personality at work. Bitch all you want after work, but at work, service wit a smile goes a long way. Customer service in general has gone way down in recent years.

I am married to a waitress and it's always the same losers groups that don't tip, ethnic and coupon cutters. So why shouldn't a waitress who sees who is a tipper and who is not be able to pre qualify her customers and determine in advance about the type of customer you are. Basically, 15% is just for doing their job, take your order and bring it with a smile. WHO CARES IF ITS FAKE?? are you that much of a insecure loser that you need to get real smiles from complete strangers? get over yourselves. your not THAT important. BETTER YET... DO THIS.... when you go to work this week, make sure you tell your employer to NOT PAY you for one day a week, which is about 20% of most peoples work week and probably a lower percentage than the cheap ass stiffers out there and then you can talk trash to waiters/waitresses. I dare say not one of the idiots above would be willing to work for free for ONE MINUTE of ONE DAY of ONE YEAR EVER...... I tip 20% or better always unless server is just bare minimum. I have eaten out a ton and for what I consider waiting service I have never had someone so bad they deserved less than 15%. But then again, I don't expect wait staff to perform emergency brain surgery or work miracles to earn their 15%.... all u tards are just cheap worthless F****

Anonymous said...

oh one other thing, for all you unbelievable people out there complaining about a bad economy.
are u kidding me with the it's a bad economy thing so you should tip less than a good economy? So it's not really the service it's the economy because you would be tipping more if the economy was good. hmmm.... hypocrite's.... IF YOU CAN'T AFFORD A TIP BECAUSE OF THE ECONOMY STAY THE F*** HOME!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Looks like someone could use a chill-pill, have your waitress wife serve you one.
Grouping all ethnics and coupon cutters is going a bit far. It must mean all waitresses are lazy, stupid and have loser husbands. Well in your case it is true.
People will always disagree on tips. It is part of the job, like it or not. Deal with it, or move on to something else. As far as the IRS goes, a server that records what is received in tips, is allowed to use that figure. There is a guidline that is used, but record keeping prevails. Since lots of tips are left on a credit card, that would be hard to disput those figures.
A server can serve anyway she feels like, but the patron can tip accordingly. Tips are not mandatory, I repeat, tips are not mandatory. That is the way the business is.

Anonymous said...

lol, i can group any groups i want based on what that group does. Do us a favor and go become a waiter or waitress, and then talk to me about my ethnic comment. And the previous comment about people being cheap asses refers to you, thanks for giving me an example.

To the poster whose wife is a waitress and thinks all who use coupons are poor tippers. I use coupons all the time - and I always tip 10% to 25% of the bill before the coupon is deducted (and before taxes) - based on the service - so be careful when lumping us into a group - I have many friends who use coupons and tip well - in fact sometimes I tip better because of the coupon - I figure the coupon is paying or helping to pay the tip so I am inclined to give a higher % tip if the service is good and figure the coupon is helping to pay for that. For all out there - I never tip based on the total but rather the subtotal i.e. before taxes - taxes are a pass through cost and I refuse to tip on a pass through cost mandated by the state. I know many people that do this so all servers need to be aware of this because you think someone may be a little low on their tip when in fact people are tipping on the bill less the sales tax which you deserve no tip on. Also, I lower my tip if a lot of alcholoic beverages are purchased - whether is is bringing me a coke or a beer there is no difference in the amount of work performed by the server (actually it is more work for the coke as most places give free refills and you have to keep filling it - with beer it is one trip and you get to charge if they want another which means a higher bill and tip) other than the fact that the restaurant jacks up the cost of the alcholoic drink by a much higher factor (I know the same could be said about food but the profit margin is in the drinks while food is priced more or less on the actual product). I know what I am talking about as I spent three years in the industry serving customers and running a restaurant.

To the person who said that servers should get a real job and go back to school--- um, I've got news for you! I just graduated from college and am 50,000 in the hole because of it. I can't find a job with my degree, and really nothing else right now because of the economy, and am now stuck waiting tables at this restaurant. I average no more than $50 dollars a shift during the week and have never seen more than $115 on the weekends. What does this tell you? Next time you go out to eat and expect fantastic service, make sure you can PAY for that great service. It's simple: There is a to-go menu for a reason.

Anonymous said...

Federal minimum wage for servers is $2.15. Most of that goest to taxes. I have yet to get a paycheck for more than $20 for more than 60 hours. Google the wage if you don't believe me. Once again, IT'S ONLY 2.15!!!

For all thoes people complaining about waiters/waitress complaining about tips..grow the fuck up! This is Friday's.. a low cost restaurant. You get what you pay for. If you are looking for excellent service and food you will have to pay for such...like The Chart House or Arthurs Fish House in Weehawkin.

wow, so as a server at TGI Fridays I found this little blog interesting. I actually searched this site trying to see where all these coupons were coming from. We just recently banned a chain of coupons that people were getting off sites such as this one, or even given to them at their work place. I do agree with both sides of the arguement. See I am a server that works two full time jobs. I work at tgi fridays, as well as Hyatt Hotels as a server in a fine dining restaurant. i personally try to bring the same standards I do at hyatt to a place like fridays. I have learn to accept that with coupons, not to expect people to tip on the pre-comp total of the bill. But what gets me is when people tip then 10% on the precomp bill. Us servers tip out 5% of our total sales. and if you only average 10% tips it really hurts you at the end of the night. We dont tip out on just our tips but our sales. so If i did $500 in precomp sales in a night, and did %100 in comps(coupons) and only made 10% tip avg., and have to tip out 5% on my total precomp sales. I would tip out $25, but because I only made 10% tips on $400 (my aftr comp sales) I would make $40 then aftr tip out $15.. so it would be easy to get screwed, especially when we make so little an hour. I do believe the best job description of a server is "to eat shit, and smile!"... but please people pay attention to your server and tip fair, there is nothing like busting your ass and going above and beyond for people and then getting $5 on a $100 bill, which with 5% tip out ends up being nothing!!! Just remember, you dont fuck with the people that handle your food!

Don't fuck with the people thay pay or don't pay your tips!!!

Well I arrived at this site looking for coupon for me & my family to use so we could try the TGI Fridays in our area. After reading all the complaints we opted to go to the Olive Garden instead. It turns out that the TGI Fridays was right next door to where we were going & they had gone out of business. I guess post's & attitudes like the one on this site, combined with poor management must have driven all their customer away.

I have a full time office job, Monday thru Friday, and I serve at a TGI Friday's on the weekends to make extra cash to help pay the bills.

I agree with both sides to a point. Yes, there are bad servers out there, and yes there are bad customers out there. Either way you look at it, it's a crap shoot. As a server I don't expect to get 20% on every table. Do I want that, of course! Who wouldn't! Do I think I'm a good server and am worth a 20% tip, yes. I work very hard to try to ensure all my guests have a great meal and experience. So when I get a $5 tip on a $50 bill I'm pretty bummed out.

And as a customer when I go out to eat I tip above and beyond the total bill amount. Why? To hopefully make that persons day just a little bit better.
Try it some time, it's a good feeling....

Anonymous said...

I go to Friday's a lot, with and without coupons. I don't tip based on my bill. I tip based on the service. I am not wasting my money to tip someone who does not do their job well - at least the bare minimum. My bill can be $200 dollars and I will only tip the waiter/waitress $5 if she/he deserved that much. If my bill is $5 and the waiter/waitress did a great job, I will tip $5-10. For me, it's not the bill, it's the service. If waiters/waitresses were tipped based on the bill amount and not their service, the service would get worse and worse. Waiters/waitresses, you get what you deserve (that is, from me - I can't speak for others).

Anonymous said...

wow there are a lot of negative people out there. kinda makes me sad to see all these negative comments. "you get what you deserve"?? why all this hate towards servers?? and servers why all this hate towards customers?? stop going out to eat if you don't want to tip, that's part of the deal when you dine out at a sit down restaurant. I have friends that serve- single moms, putting them selves through college, laid off and it's the only job they could get right now. these people work for tips to get by not because it's fun.
and stop serving if you think so low of the customers that come in.

Anonymous said...

Quit complaining or quit your job. Dont you people ever think your attitude and service affects your tip amount. maybe you shouldnt be so angry when you dont get a tip for one table which in the long run will ruin your chances for the next table because of your damn attitude. I always tip 20% for my total amount when i go to dinner with my wife and kids, but its never gonna be good enough for some people, stop being so upset or find a different job.

I am a server, and I agree with the other servers that have posted, that customers need to pay for there service and give a decent tip, if you can't afford to tip your server then don't go out, or go to a place you can afford like burger king. I have worked in the food industry for over ten years as a server. The people who have posted about not liking your job then quit, it is because of people like you that we don't care for our job, and if it weren't for servers then you wouldn't have a place to go out and eat. I like my job because I like interacting with different people, but I don't like it when I give good service and they can't leave at least 15%. They think that 10% is still acceptable, news flash this isn't the 1980's, 10% is not acceptable this day and age, and if you blame it on the economy, then don't go out to places you can't afford.

Anonymous said...

And this is why there shouldn't be any tipping at all. Servers (this goes for hair stylists, as well) should get paid a standard, up-front wage. The reward for good service should be that you stand a better chance of keeping your job. Maybe, if you're so good that customers tell your supervisor (or your supervisor just notices over the course of your employment), you'll get a raise. If you perform poorly, you should get fired, and someone else should get a chance to do your job well. If the customer likes the service, then they'll come back for more; if not, they'll go somewhere else. (Gee, this sounds a lot like MY job!) Simple. No awkward 'how much of a tip should I leave?'...no b****ing on web boards. And, yes, if you don't feel your wage is sufficient for the work you perform, you are always free to look for another job. Doesn't get any fairer than that.

Anonymous said...

wow, comment after comment of cheap F***s. What does "there doesn't need to be any tipping jobs" have to do with anything on this forum. The fact is there are tipping jobs and that's reality. And performing the bare minimum should bring 15%. Anyone who says different is a total idiot and cheap bast**d. To think a server should have to do anything besides bring your food and drink to you to get 15% is outrageous and just goes to show how chickin sh*t ppl really are. When I go out to eat I always factor in 15% into the cost and if I get exceptional service I pay more than 15%. And to the guy talking about giving 5 bucks on a 200 dollar ticket you are obviously the ethnic group I was talking about earlier. Thanks for showing up on this board because you do exist and you just proved it. Servers, I am sorry there are so many losers out there that would just as soon spit on u as pay for the service you provide. All I can do is try to call these f*gs out for being f*gs and hopefully enough people will realize what douches they are and stop stiffing servers because they didn't find the cure for aids during their dinner sitting.

Anonymous said...

To the last person who posted; what is this going to accomplish? Cussing people out and claiming that servers should always get 15% is crap. I was a waitress at a local shop, as yes it does bite to get a dollar when the bill was 30- and yes I felt cheated quite often. But this doesn't always happen, and referring to an entire group of people that are ethnic or use coupons as such only proves you are as ignorant as they are.

I do believe in the 18% standard, and generally when we have a coupon we tend to give more. However, I have given far less in cases like when I visited O'Charleys on a Tuesday night; our server took 20 minutes to take our order, never filled our drinks, wasn't the one to bring out our order, never brought the rolls I asked for- instead I stopped another server, he knocked the drink over on the rolls (a new cup I finally asked the same guy that brought our rolls) didn't offer to replace the soaked ones and offered no apology or care that he did so and forgot my box after we sat another fifteen minutes waiting for the check. I would have easily given the tip to the server that covered his ass; but he deserved nothing more than I would have gotten at my old job; fired.

Yes there are cheap people; yes there are bad servers. If you don't like either, do something about it. Cussing one another will not solve a thing, it will only make you look like a child with a temper.

Coupon is expired, by the way.

I used to be a server too. And yes I dealt with coupons. Its sucks to get a crappy tip, but thats part of the job. You know your going to get a crappy tip at least once a night. Deal with it! The more you bitch about it the less tip I would give you!

Anonymous said...

Wow. I'm sad I got a TGI Friday's gift card at all. I may never use it. They obviously hire big time babies.

Times are tough for everyone. Get real, people. There's nothing wrong with coupon clipping, and there's nothing wrong with tipping less for poor service. Give great service and you'll be rewarded more times than not. That's the same in any industry. It's better to have the customer there - you have an opportunity to wow them and take home some serious cash.

First of all its not our business what the irs expects from you and if the restaurant assumes you get a tip and post that on your w-2 get together and fight it. If you don't receive it from the customers make your employer pay it if they are going to report it to the irs. you guys should be glad people are still eating out or we could add you to the employment rate. i will be at fridays tomorrow and hope the service is good since you all dont seem to like your jobs.

"""WOW""" My friend and I were going to celebrate our birthdays this weekend with a large party eating with us. I just came here to see if there were any extra deals we could get and WOW, look at all the disgruntled servers. I am shocked to say the least of how horrible the servers are talking about the customers/employers. If its so true that the servers are only making their wages through the customers, then the customers are their employers in a sence. You servers are cutting your employers down and DONT deserve your jobs at all. I am changing where my birthday party dinner will be. I dont want my food "SPIT" on by disgruntled servers. There are too many people looking for a job and are happy with what ever they get to put up with servers like TGIF's servers. You guys changed the way I look at TGIF. I will never go there to eat again! By the way, if I get great service I tip about 30% if I get bad service, that percentage goes down.
