WalletPop recently posted on the best and worst grocery stores as rated by their users. Here are the 20 that readers love and 10 that they love to hate.
I’m a dedicated Wegmans shopper so I whole-heartedly agree with their listing as one of the reader-preferred grocery stores. I even drive right past a Giant Food and a Harris Teeter to get there because of the prices and the ambience.
Let me know what you think and whether any others should be added to these lists. Or, if you disagree with the favorites and least favorites below.

I agree with the most loved: HEB. I LOVE my HEB, they have some of the best meal deals--buy this, get that free.
I LOVE Trader Joes! Since moving to Texas 2 years ago, I have been hoping they would open one here. So far, no luck.
I do love my Kroger!
I love Wegmans. Any place with $2.79 a gallon milk is tops. The only thing I don't like is their weekly flyer. It never lists any good sales or loss leaders so I can't plan my trip. Any one have any way to figure out what Wegman's loss leaders are?
I grew in a city near D.C and was soo excited when Wegmans opened. That was one of my favorite stores. :-) We moved near Dallas a year and a half ago and while I was sad to not have Wegmans, there's a chain called Market Street and it looks JUST like Wegmans .. so I was happy to find that! :-)
I love Kroger. It's my favorite, hands down.
I agree completely with Food Lion being on the disliked list. I dread shopping at our Food Lion. The customer service is poor, the prices are high, and the shelves are often bare.
I love Aldi too. Fareway is also a great grocery store, although I do not consider it being worth the drive to get cheaper groceries there than HyVee (which is just okay).
When I need groceries, I go to Aldi first, then HyVee for anything else I need. I probably should just go to Fareway instead of HyVee though.
aaaurgh! we only have stores that are on the most hated list! not a single one of the most loved stores in my whole state! :(
i'll have to live vicariously through other people's deals!
I can't believe Kroger wasn't on the loved list! They're my fave...but then again, my choices are limited in central Mississippi.
I love this list! My favorite store was on the good list and my least favorite store was on the bad list.
Why I love Publix:
they give the kids free cookies at the bakery
they give the kids free ballons
they give the kids free crayons and coloing books
they have free coffee every day
they have great samples to taste every day
they store is a smaller size and well staffed
they carry out your groceries
they are nice to coupon ladies
they managers are resonable and go out of their way to help
they employees are fantastic (once an employee spent 10 minutes helping me read every loaf of bread to find one without soybean oil for my little girl)
okay, I could go on but I'll stop blogging your blog Erin!
I definitely agree with this list. My favorites are Aldi, Hy-Vee and Dillons (a Kroger store). Price Chopper is not on my favorite list either, but they do have a good butcher. That's my 2 cents. I feel bad for the queen of the urban jungle!
Love Kroger.
But, totally agree with Wal Mart being on the worst list.
The few times I have tried to buy fruit or meat from them, it was terrible. Fruit went bad almost immediately.
And, it isn't just my local store. When I visit my in laws in Florida, it is the exact same way.
Where is Harris Teeter? We moved recently and the only HT is 30 minutes away!! With the triple coupons and OUTSTANDING customer service - I miss my HT.
Love Publix! Always a good experience there. Staff is very nice and helpful.
Walmart is terrible. Every time I buy fruit there it is just the worst.
We love Trader Joe's. Always good merchandise at great prices. We also love Sprouts (Mostly in CA and AZ I think), and Meijer (midwest only).
I've found Fry's (Kroger) can be good or bad depending on the area. We have 2 different experiences at Fry's stores less than 5 miles apart.
I think I have only heard of like 3 or 4 of these stores (I must be in a TOTALLY different part of the country than you!).
But I must say that I love WinCo...I am not sure why it is on the worst list, but it is a great store, with low low prices.
And my favorite store is King Soopers (a Kroger chain). Great deals and double coupons every day!!
I see Martins on the best list, so I guess Giant - Carlisle fits in since they are technically the same. I love my Giant, they have "The Treehouse" to watch my three year old while I coupon, so helpful. They also have double coupons every day and have a fantastic gas rewards program. I have saved up to $1.50 on my gas (per gallon for a full tank) by using coupons to buy their "Earn Gas Rewards Points" items for almost nothing. Always have great BOGO meat sales too. Love them and I agree with the posts about WalMart, their produce is moldy in the store most of the time when I go to even look. Ewww!
I LOVE and really miss HEB, that being said, I"m probably the only person out there that really loves Super Wal-Mart. You can't beat the prices, I haven't had the bad luck with produce that other's have had (I have had bad luck with produce at Trader Joes though, I still really like that store in spite of that!) You can get everything you need at Wal-mart. My grandmother says if you can't get it at Wal-mart then you don't need it!
Great List,
I have never heard of most of thost stores, but I was thrilled to see that in a national list of stores my local favorite, Ukrops, made the list. They have great meat & great produce. When I went to visit my family a couple of years ago in Tennessee I was blessed to be in a hotel near Publix and really liked that store for that week...wish I had one closer.
I also really wish I had a Wedman's the way you guys talk about it.
Thanks for the list, great idea!
I definitely agree with Bonnie- Giant is fabulous. We don't have a store with a gas station nearby, but the prices are great plus there are in store and online coupons for things like meat and produce. At Giant, meat and store brand products are good quality. The pharmacists are really nice and they match prescription prices (including Walmart.)
The other major chain in Philly is Acme (now owned by Albertsons). Their prices on everyday items are high and they can't seem to get the concept of keeping cold food cold.
I love Wal-mart and can't wait for them to finish refurbishing our local store so the Food part is open!
I have not had bad luck with their produce, while I have at HEB. Currently, I've got a love-hate relationship with HEB. They've got some great deals, but its terribly hard to find anything there, so I end up going back and forth across the store multiple times (fighting crowds in too-small aisles) to try and make sure I get my "free" stuff.
Blah, it sucks living in the midwest. The only 2 stores that we even have from this list here in OK is Aldis and Wal-Mart. We have a few other local stores that double coupons, but the products are way overpriced. It's easier to go to Wal-Mart and not mess with the couponsc.
I have to agree w/ TC... I love my super Wal-mart, I can usually get decent deals & pricing and some products I can't find at other area stores. I am unfortunate, we don't have many of the "fav" stores in my area, although we do have an Aldi, and I like it... I was shocked to see Winn Dixie... guess it was just our area... we used to have Winn Dixie, but they were HORRIBLE, and they eventually closed down. Unfortunately we don't have a huge variety in stores now, just Wal-Mart, Meijer, Kroger, Whole Foods, Fresh Market & a local place that is about to close.
I completely disagree with FOOD LION being the worst! I love my Food Lion-they are clean, friendly, and have the best prices around. I can't believe no one else thinks that! When you look at their every day prices on the shelves, then look at Superfresh, Giant, Safeway, etc., Food Lion is WAY CHEAPER. And they have the best hot ads too, especially when they run the 2 or 3 day sales.
