Want Free Books?

I’d been meaning to do a round-up of the new sites that let you swap books but The Wall Street Journal beat me to it today! I personally like to get out of the house to hit the library with the kids, but with gas prices as high as they are I’m excited about PaperbackSwap.com and BookMooch.com. They’re like Netflix for book lovers!

The basic concept is that you search for and select books you’d like to read. Just pay $2-3 for shipping per book and boom, the books are on your doorstep in a few days. Return them or don’t. It’s up to you how long you want to keep them, even forever if you like. No late fees ever since you own the books, you’re not just borrowing them.

If you want books that are both free and brand new, or if you just want cash, there’s still time to take advantage of a few great summer reading offers:

* Get a free book at Borders.com through August 8 (up to $5). Just enter BR41925 at checkout and you can even pick up the book at your local Borders bookstore.

* Barnes & Noble is offering a Summer Reading Program for kids grades 1-6. Just read 8 books, complete a reading journal, and get a coupon for a free book.

* You can also sign your kids up for the Summer Reading Program at Commerce Bank. Your kids just need to read 10 books by September 30 to get $10 deposited into a new or existing Young Savers account.

The coupon worked for me. Thanks! Also, Half Price Books gives out a $3 gift certificate each week if your child reads at least 15 minutes a day for 5 days. My daughter is a toddler so I read to her and we've been able to get a free or nearly free book to add to our collection each week. All we have to do is fill out the reading log that is on their website.

Wow, great information, I am all about books - free just makes it better! I have signed up for PaperBackSwap, listed 11 books and can now request 2 books. It was very easy to use and has many features like a forum where I can read posts about books left by others or make a post.

Katherine - Thanks for the information about Half Price Books. I will have to see how I might be able to use this in my ELA classroom, it could be very motivating for "reading logs" students need to keep.

i've been a member of paperbackswap for about a year now and LOVE it. I've gotten so many new books to read and have sent out that many more. We've basically cut out our book buying at Barnes and Noble because of that site.

I also joined dvdswap.com to help get rid of old kid movies and have gotten some good dvds from there. Such great sites!

The coupon code you entered is invalid. Please check the code on your coupon and re-enter it.

Thank you so much for the coupon code!! You got me out of an ugly bookworm dilemma with that borders code. If you really want to know the full scope of it, it's on my blog (http://mypreciouspennies.blogspot.com/2008/08/book.html)
The bottom line though is you helped me get a book I -REALLY- wanted for nothing, so THANK YOU!!!
