Today is the day, the very first $5 Charity Challenge. I’d like to give you a $5 gift card to spend at CVS, Walgreens, Wal-Mart or Rite Aid on items you can donate to your local church, food pantry, homeless shelter or other charitable organization in your area.
Local charities are often in need of shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, razors, lotion, toilet paper, paper towels, dish soap, laundry soap, light bulbs, baby wipes, household cleaners, trash bags, etc. And of course don't forget non-perishable food items and pet food for food pantries.
Here’s what you need to do. Just post your very best scenario for spending $5 at any of the above stores using actual coupons you have on hand and then link back to your post using Mr. Linky below. Don’t have a blog? Then leave your scenario in a comment. Be sure to include the items, coupons, store and total, along with your email address.
On Tuesday evening at 8 p.m. ET I’ll randomly select a winner and will mail out the $5 gift card on Wednesday morning (so please make it easy as possible for me to contact you quickly for your mailing address). I’d like to do my best to get the gift card to you before the end of the week’s sales.
All that I ask is that you take a photo of what you bought using the $5 gift card and either send me a link to the blog post you write about the charitable donation or just email me the photo and charity name. I’d love to promote your good work.
I’m really looking forward to your participation and to working together to help those in need in our local communities.

In my community, I support the local family services, pregnancy resource centers & a lot of my CVS goodies go into my Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes. This is a great challenge & meme. Thank you!
Erin, we support a homeless church, which I've shared with you before. It is called Target Dayton and is part of the Nazarene Compassionate Ministries. Can't wait to see how much people get to donate!!!
I've donated to numerous organization with my freebies from CVS & Walgreens. I even took a whole suitcase full of stuff to Guatemala! :) I've shared with friends & family and a local pregnancy home. Thanks for this challenge!!! I would like to also donate to our local senior center.
What a great idea! I help several friends, family members and 3 different seniors that are on fixed incomes. However I have made a donation to Salvation Army.
Wow -- It's so fantastic that so many people are already actively donating to their communities! :)
How far can a $5 gift card go? WOW Would you have to use it all at once?? I have had a $25 gift card for 2 months :o) and still have about $8 left. I donate most of my extras to the church. They have Yellow bags to fill and bring in for needy families. $5 could fill a lot of bags!!
I save my freebies/low cost items up and take them monthly to our local food bank. Although I'll continue to do that (since it works for me and my family), I posted about your contest on my blog. Hope you get some new challengers!
You can read about my donations here:

I would spend the gift card to buy items for the Ronald McDonald House in Fairfax VA. My good friend had a daughter at Fairfax hospital for the first 6 months of her life, so she and her family lived at the RMH. I had never known about this charity before my friend used then, and now I do what I can to support them.
My friend lost her daughter when she was 9 months old, so she uses her birthday as a time to ask for donations to the RMH in memory of her daughter.
I would use this gift card to give to the RMH - not just at her daughter's birthday.
We haven't done our fair share for charity, so thank you for bringing this together to make people think about giving. As a new (ish) mother, I think I would like to give to a charity that helps battered mothers and children. Any suggestions?
I spent $10 but got $12 back in rebates. Does that count for the challenge? All but one thing is going to the food shelf. And I have a second trip/post in the works.
Thanks so much for doing this challenge.
AJ - I don't know of any national charities for battered women but most areas have local ones. Call a local church or your county Family Services office to see if they know of any.
The local sheriff's office could probably tell you where the nearest shelter for battered women would be. Also, sometimes they have to remove children from their homes and they like to have something to give the child. A friend used to put together kits with a stuffed animal, toothbrush, second hand tee shirt (for sleeping in), etc.
I have enjoyed putting together school kits
lately. With prices the way are right now, I can put 2 together for $5.
wud luv to use it for the foodbank here post Hurricane Dolly
