5 Ways to Save Money on Your July 4th Cookout

According to The Nielsen Company, Americans are expected to eat 110 million pounds of hot dogs this holiday season. Yikes. As for burgers, we’ll be eating 57 million pounds. With increasing food prices and between all the burgers, chips, sodas and condiments needed for our cookouts, we’ll need to hone in on ways to save now more than ever, so here you go:

1) Buy Beef and Chicken in Family Packs: It’s always cheaper to buy meats in the family pack of 3 pounds or more (at my store it’s over 60% cheaper!). Just divide up the meat you don’t use and put it into freezer bags. Mark the outside of the bags so you know at a glance how much beef or chicken is in each one. Don’t have the space for the club pack? Go for frozen patties, which cost less per pound than the smaller packages of ground beef.

2) Look for Buy-One-Get-One-Free Deals: In the summer you’ll find BOGO deals on ice cream and potato chips just about every week of the summer. Stock up on these items when they’re at this rock bottom price.

3) Don’t Give in to Pre-Made Foods: Sure the packaged chicken kabobs and fruit salad look beautiful, but don’t pop these in your shopping cart. You’ll save around 50% on both the kabobs and the fruit salad if you make them yourself. Or better yet, get your husband to make them!

4) Beware of 10/$10 Sales: The trend these days is to quote prices in the weekly grocery ads as for five, ten or even 20 of the item. Unless you really want to stock up, you don’t generally need to buy that many. Condiments are often priced that way this time of year as we head into the July 4th barbecues. I just saw ketchup on sale 10/$10, but I think I’ll just buy one or two.

5) Maximize Your Produce Buys: You can’t have hamburgers without lettuce and tomatoes. Lettuce is generally sold by the head, so pick the biggest head in the bunch, and avoid buying bagged lettuce (twice as much as lettuce by the head!). As for tomatoes, choose tomatoes on the vine and also visit the FDA web site for updates on tomatoes and food safety.

The stores in my area that do 10/$10 don't require me to buy 10 items. I just get as many as I want for $1 each.

I'm a little late on this post, but the 10/$10, at times has multiple products on this promotion. I try to use my coupons and buy a couple of the different products, like a mix and match. If you are lucky enough, you can get a lot of stuff for free.
